Jjajangmyeon

Category: Korean Chinese
Jjajangmyeon is one of the staple dishes of Korean Chinese cuisine, along with jjambbong and tangsuyuk. It consists of noodles topped with a thick black bean sauce made with stir-fried meat and vegetables. The dish originated from Chinese zhajiangmian, but the Korean version is generally sweeter and greasier.
In Korea, jjajangmyeon is often thought of as cheap delivery food, along with fried chicken. It's so popular that its price is even used to track inflation in Korea. Eating jjajangmyeon on moving day or graduation day has also long been something of a tradition.
Some restaurants serve it with a fried egg on top, and there are plenty of variations. Ganjjajang has a drier, more concentrated sauce, while jaengban jjajang is served as a larger, shareable portion on a platter. Instant jjajang noodles are also very popular: Jjapagetti is one you might recognize if you’ve seen the movie Parasite.
